What Is a
Redshirt Player?
A redshirt player is one who sits out of a year of competition. Often, a coach may feel that a freshman is not ready for the collegiate level of competition, and he will red-shirt that player to give the athlete time to develop and mature in the game. Sometimes the redshirt is due to injury, and the rules vary.
